The term “refit” means to make or be made ready for use again by repairing, re-equipping, or resupplying. Sometimes it also means preparing the object for additional use.
Like everything else, an old yacht also needs refitting for it to function properly and to have good fuel consumption.
Sometimes it is more economical to buy an old sailboat and refit it. There are many sailors who keep doing this in order to try out new boats. It is just like buying a second hand car and then repairing it completely to give it a new look. Just as people who love driving get bored of their old car after some years and want to buy a new one, similarly, people who are passionate sailors, often find the same boat or yacht boring and look for other options after a couple of years.
Why do people do yacht refitting?
There are primarily three reasons why people go for a refit on their yachts.
a) Some people love their yachts and just want to refresh the interiors to modern standards.
b) The second group consists of those buyers who want to acquire a used boat and refurbish it as buying a brand new boat will be costlier.
c) The third group of people who like to buy a new boat, but have decided to upgrade their existing boat.
Just as every coin has a flip side of it, everything in this world comes with a disadvantage. Yacht refitting too is no exception. The advantage of a refit is that an interior refit can transform a yacht into something as good as-or better than-new. But it can also prove to be an unwise decision if not done properly. Hence, proceed with all due caution.
Stages of refitting
A refitting usually has three stages in it, that is, three separate goals to achieve. The first one is to make the boat structurally and mechanically sound. The second goal is to maximize the boat’s comfort both at anchor and while underway. The third goal is strictly aesthetics, that is, to improve its looks and style.
Water leaks (plumbing issues) and wrong electrical wiring are in general some common and notorious problems in older boats.
When to do a refit ideally?
Usually a boat has 20 odd years of life. And if you are very fond of that boat and planning to use it beyond those 20 years, go for a refit first. It’s going to need some very serious attention in many areas to make it a safe and comfortable. The marine environment is very harsh on all boats. If you’re considering an older boat for cruising, do it after refitting.
Refitting is expensive, and in most cases considered as an investment. Seldom does a refit increase the value of a yacht. At best it can help bring the value up to where it should be market-wise. Labor alone can be pretty costly.
Doing a complete refit on an older boat is very much an all-consuming task. It will consume your time, energy, and money. And, if you’re able to deal successfully with all that consumption, it may just be the most rewarding thing you’ll ever do.
